Brittany Owens-Davis: Using Your Talents

I simply love this woman’s great example!

From afar she has been a great inspiration to me. She is such a wonderful example of one who uses her talents to serve the Lord and encourage others. If you don’t already know about what this incredible woman does, you really need to check it out. She is one who truly loves the Lord and her zeal will encourage you to grow closer to the Lord!

Meet Brittany, the Virtuous Woman…

“I publish a free bi-monthly Christian women’s magazine entitled, Virtuous Magazine. I’ve also written two books. The latest is entitled, “Awakening Love: 31 Days To Renewing Every Relationship.” You can read the entire first chapter for free on the website. My first book is, “Style Your Soul: Get Dressed From The Inside Out.” I also publish a free weekly email devotional every Thursday. You can sign up for it on the website, http://www.virtuousmagazine.com.
I have a class on deepening your relationship with God and The League of Virtuous Women is a sisterhood to grow spiritually and live purposefully. We cover topics ranging from forgiveness to finance. In addition to that I speak at a variety of ladies events throughout the year and keep my home which currently consists of my beloved, Willie, and myself.

I appreciate the work you do in helping other women to grow closer to God. What encouraged you to begin?

I married my beloved in May 2009 and about a month before the wedding we found out that he had medullary thyroid cancer. So in June, right after the honeymoon, we came home and he underwent surgery.

To say I was stressed was an understatement. All went well with his surgery but my very active and new husband was practically on bed rest for about four months. So I needed to channel my jumbled nerves and painting rooms and scrapbooking weren’t cutting it. So I started Virtuous Magazine. I’ve always wanted to use my talents for the Lord and I love magazines so it was a natural fit!

You are so busy! How do you manage your time? e.g.: A. What are some things you have found help you keep the house well (cooking and cleaning) during busy times?

A schedule works wonders. I don’t always keep to it but if I simply choose three things to get done this week instead of spending time worrying about all of the things I haven’t done I am immensely more productive. Plus, I feel great about accomplishing those three things.
As far as cooking goes it’s just my beloved and I right now so it’s not very difficult to whip something up quickly for two. But with cleaning I’ve found that I work well in batches, meaning I complete all of the laundry in one day, instead of a few loads each day. My aunt takes 15 min. each night before she goes to bed to tidy up, which is also a great way to avoid overwhelm or being unprepared if someone drops by.

What do you do to find time for your husband and keep marriage fun?

We’ve decided to alternate planning date night to keep them interesting. I love sites like Groupon because you can do fun things at a reasonable price. We’re looking at taking a fencing lesson soon. En garde!

What do you do to find time for personal bible study/ prayer in your daily life?

I begin my day with reading my Bible and prayer. You never know what will come up in a day so I make sure to spend time with God first. Plus spending time in the word will help set a great foundation for your entire day.

What do you do to help yourself when facing discouragement? How do you deal with things when you feel “overwhelmed?” How do you keep a good attitude?

When facing discouragement I allow it. It’s okay to feel discouraged but I don’t stay there because discouragement leads to despair and despair to depression. I simply think to myself that whatever it was I missed out on or didn’t work out wasn’t for me. I thank God for all I have and I adjust my attitude and perceptions about the situation.

When I feel overwhelmed the best thing for me to do is what’s called a mind dump. I just write down everything that needs to be done to clear my head. Then I divide the tasks into 30-60-90 day windows. And I prioritize between things that have to be done in 30 days and things that need to be done in 90 days. But this also works for immediate things. You can decide what needs to be done in the next 30 min. and what can wait a few hours.

Having a plan makes everything better.

You look so good! How do you find time to look after yourself when you are so busy?

Thank you! I’m such a routine type of person in this area. I work out at home with a DVD or run on the treadmill but I have to do it at the same time each day to stay consistent. Plus, because of my beloved’s cancer we are both very mindful of what we put into our bodies. We make fresh fruit and veggie smoothies.

What is your favorite scripture, and why?

I have so many favorite scriptures and they’re all my favorite for a different reason. But I’ll just list a few below.

“For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety” (Prov. 24:6)

“So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:6)

“Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalm 31:5 )

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor. 10:13)
